After several chapters of the setup, this book focuses on building a single application, with each chapter to enhance it with another. I've always been a fan of this style. This makes examples look much more "real world" and allow the patient reader, who actually follow through from beginning to end, learn more than just rails.
The author clearly expert Ruby language and Rails framework, but more than that, is a software engineer who has worked to introduce best practices throughout the text.

The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilog [Extended Edition + Digital Copy]
at 3/11/2011 07:48:00 PM
Perhaps
the film's most eagerly awaited fantasy of all time and nearly five
years in the making, The Fellowship of the Ring captures the spirit of
Tolkien's Middle-earth saga far more faithfully than millions of fans
dared hope. (Ralph Bakshi offered an animated adaptation in 1978, but less rousing response.)
The
story begins as elderly hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) releases the
ownership of a memento of the most valuable, a gold ring that has a
magical power, to his young heir, Frodo (Elijah Wood). Charged
with casting the ring into the fire of a forged, the young hobbits
began an arduous journey in Middle-earth, accompanied by a sturdy band
that includes his best friend, Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin), changing the
wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), haunted warrior Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), and toned dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), among others.
Opposed by the traitor wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the messenger of Satan the Dark Lord, Sauron, is constantly attacked Fellowship makes its way slowly toward the cruel land of Mordor.

Stories: All New Tales [book review]
at 1/25/2011 07:32:00 AM
Only Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio could have pitched the idea for Stories to their publishers and not been met with blank looks, awkward fidgeting and a polite but firm ‘no thanks’. Stories is a marketing department’s nightmare: no obvious genre, no clear indication of which shelf it ought to sit on in Waterstone’s, too literary to be called ‘fantasy’, too fantastical to be called ‘literary’.
And that’s the whole point.
With this anthology of all-new short fiction, Gaiman and Sarrantonio set out to show us that genre classifications are irrelevant and often restrictive - if a tale is gripping enough, the reader won’t care. As it turns out, they’re absolutely right.

Summary book; "Tutorials in Introductory Physics
" is based on extensive teaching
experience and more than twenty years of research in which the Physics
Education
Group has sought to identify and address common difficulties
that students encounter in studying physics.
Development of the tutorials was motivated by the conviction that in order to develop a functional understanding of the material students need more assistance than they can obtain through listening to lectures, reading the textbook, and solving standard quantitative problems.
"Tutorials in Introductory Physics

" is intended to supplement these traditional forms
of instruction by providing a structure that promotes the active mental
engagement of students in the process of learning physics. The materials
are equally appropriate for algebra-based and calculus-based courses.
Working together in small collaborative groups, students help one another go through the steps in reasoning necessary for the construction and application of important concepts and principles. The tutorials have been rigorously class-tested at the University of Washington, at other research universities, and at two-year and four-year colleges
